I've actually done the same with a Kafka novel. Still not read/finished The Man Who Disappeared. I wanted to have something unread by him. Save it for the "right time"… but when is that? ;p

Still on the SF binge. Been reading some Arthur C. Clarke lately. Rendezvous With Rama was pretty good.

Just started on Childhood's End.

Ringworld by Larry Niven was kind of meh.

I liked the concept, but the writing felt really clunky at times. Even cheesy. It sort of got in the way of mood and atmosphere.

The overly chauvinistic tone didn't really help either. Every female character was either mind-numbingly naive/stupid/simple or a prostitute. Or both, in one instance.

Pretty good book. Poetic, poignant, warm, bleak, bittersweet, grotesque, and so on.

i'm reading 'bazaar of bad dreams' by stephen king but i'm not liking it so far, two stories in. usually i like his stories.

also reading 'dragonbone chair' by tad williams. read it in high school but recently saw g.r.r.r.r.rmartin cite it as inspo for GoT so i was curious to reread. it's sloooooow.

Never read any King, actually. Where would one start?

the talisman or it are pretty accessible for a starter… or the shining, if you're not going to get hung up on it being different from the movie.

that said, i started on the running man and gerald's game was my second so it's hard to go too far wrong.

Read anything by Kobo Abe? Often cited as Japan's Kafka.

Started reading The Ruined Map today. Seems interesting.

The book was pretty good, btw. Disorienting, in a good way. Felt like a weird mix between Raymond Chandler and Franz Kafka.

Seems like there's a film version from 1968 too, btw.

Just read Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle. Fascinating read.

Quite "fast"-paced, with very short chapters, and a terse, bitter and darkly humorous tone throughout.

I read it as a sort of dark allegory of The Cuban Missile Crisis and fear of nuclear destruction in general.

Well worth a read, imo.

what is knowledge? how can we know what we know, and whether we really know it at all? how can you derive contextual clues when all context has been stricken? how does communication happen when there's no common ground?

if you like questions like this, you'll probably like 'eden' by stanislaw lem. does this book answer any of those questions? hell if i know. probably not. but the author shows how we might explore those questions, in a story of six explorers making an accidental crash landing on a strange planet. as they survey their bizarre new environment, every theoretical answer gives rise to an endless new slew of questions.

very enjoyable read, very much the psychological side of science fiction. highly recommend.

If you liked Eden, you'd probably like The Invincible too.

Same terrain, but slightly different questions. From Wikipedia:

The novel turns into an analysis of the relationship between different life domains, and their place in the universe. In particular, it is an imaginary experiment to demonstrate that evolution may not necessarily lead to dominance by intellectually superior life forms. The plot also involves a philosophical dilemma, juxtaposing the values of humanity and the efficiency of mechanical insects.

Reading this one now. Fun so far. Sort of mock-highbrow, full of inspired nonsense and "academic rock-throwing".

Just read another Vonnegut. Also excellent. I'm not sure how Vonnegut did it, but the book is both simple/direct and very ambiguous - tackling all the Big Questions with bitter irony, black humour and heartbreak. Recommended.
